ABOUT THE ORIGINAL BOOK

Vita Sexualis

By Ōgai Mori. The title, “Vita Sexualis,” is Latin for “The Sexual Life.” This autobiographical novel features a protagonist who works as a philosopher and writes the history of his own sexual desires. Upon its release in 1909, the magazine “Subaru” in which it appeared was banned.

Ōgai Mori

Born in Shimane Prefecture in 1862 as Rintarō Mori. A graduate of the University of Tokyo’s Faculty of Medicine in 1881, he served as an Army surgeon. Following four years of study in Germany starting in 1884, he wrote The Dancing Girl, inspired by a romance he experienced while abroad. He also authored numerous other works, including The Abe Family, Sansho the Bailiff, and The Takase Boat. He is regarded as one of the leading figures of modern Japanese literature. He passed away in 1922.
